Performance artist Shanley Kane (@shanley) agitates on behalf of women and demands greater diversity in the tech industry (good) but according to Breitbart, it turns out that in 2011 and 2012 she was dating Andrew "weev" Auernheimer, a white supremacist and Internet troll. Auernheimer tells Breitbart that he taught Kane how to be a troll. He also claims that she shared his racist views. Now he says he's sorry for creating a monster. Whoa!

Kane is a former tech PR person who has gained some notoriety in tech circles mostly for being super aggressive on Twitter, where she uses foul language and sometimes writes in ALL CAPS LIKE THIS TO LET YOU KNOW HOW ANGRY SHE IS!!! She also hates men. And patriarchy.

Auernheimer says that when he knew Shanley she hated people of color just as much as he does:

"Shanley acts as a very vocal advocate for women of color in the technology community now, [but] the things that once came out of her mouth about minorities and interracial relationships would be commonplace in the comments of neo-Nazi websites like The Daily Stormer."

Shanley addressed some of this on Twitter, claiming that she did indeed have an ugly past, and had intercourse with a lot of assholes. She's grown a lot and changed since then.

Shanley seems to have a lot of followers on Twitter, where people take her seriously.

Are those people getting punked by a really good performance artist doing an imitation of an extremely angry feminist?

Is Auernheimer pranking Breitbart and making up this story about dating Kane?

Are Kane and Auernheimer doing this together, as some kind of mega-troll?

Has the whole tech industry just become one big bag of rats?

I want to believe that the whole thing is just a big huge prank involving fake neo-Nazis and fake angry feminists, because the alternative is too depressing.
