One reason there aren't enough H-1B visas for foreign software engineers? They have to compete with fashion models. Bloomberg says models are twice as likely to get their visas as programmers—proving that no matter where you're from, life is just like high school.

Fuck the H1-B system. I'm sick and tired of these folks worked to death for lower wages and the constant fear of being deported. Not to mention the fact that many aren't able to gain permanent residency.

I worked with a lab full of research scientists, most on H1-B visas. They all lived in apartments owned by the owner of the lab, and they worked 6-7 days a week, and around 10+ hours per day. They were all constantly afraid of being fired and deported.

It was incredibly depressing.

What kind of lab? nitasha@gawker.com. My dad came to the U.S. on an H-1B, but I think there were better options then.
