The founder reportedly invested $20 million of his own money, so it makes sense that he would take his time and create the product that he wants to create rather than attempt to make a crappy fad product in order to sell it off and start a new crappy product.

People get upset that the company doesn't have a business model just yet. I'm not sure why considering anyone who has an investment in it has a ton of money already, and isn't looking to retire based on Quora's success. Then there are the people who get upset that one day Quora may have business model which would include advertising, and feel entitled to monetary compensation for their contributions. These are usually the same people who say they don't use the site. What I don't understand is why anyone would be upset over a free site/service making money through advertising. It's a business. If you need further proof that the model works, look at the behemoth that is Google. It's basically the most successful online ad agency there is, and yet I have never heard a user complain about that.
I don't think being founded by rich people has much to do with it, though it certainly gives the founders an opportunity that most startup people don't have, which is to make even more money off an acquisition by investing directly, requiring less cash from VCs. They will never make any money as a business, though. The plan is to sell it to Yahoo (as an "upgrade"/facelift to their own shitty Q&A service), Google, or the like. These assholes get all the sociopolitical benefits of calling themselves "entrepreneurs," but without the hassle of actually, you know, having to make money via ordinary business.
Quora would be doomed in the hands of Yahoo.
