When Benchmark Capital's Bill Gurley first expressed his concerns about "burn rate," the rate at which companies burn through his venture capital, startups started wondering whether they were setting money aflame too fast.

Fred Wilson is a star venture capitalist, one of those check-cutting white men whose blog posts are read like tea leaves by his peers (Think Marc Andreessen with less skull and more brain). But complaining about wasteful startups wasting the excessive cash you dumped on them is a dumb look.

Bill Gurley, the Benchmark Capital investor who backed Snapchat and Uber, is uber-bullish when it comes to his own portfolio. But the rest of Silicon Valley, he says, is not nearly frightened enough: "No one's fearful, everyone's greedy, and it will eventually end."

Earlier this afternoon, Bloomberg reported that Google Ventures managing partner Bill Maris (the Glass man in the middle, above) thinks that Uber could one day be worth "$200 billion or more." Why would a sensible outlet like Bloomberg give an Uber investor the platform to pump up his investment?

Yesterday, Nextdoor CEO Nirav Tolia was charged with a felony for allegedly leaving the scene of a hit-and-run that left a female driver injured. Speeding away in a BMW X5 reflects poorly on a startup like Nextdoor, which raised $100 million to build a social network for good neighbors. But for Tolia, this sudden scrutiny could also undo years of rehab on his tarnished personal brand.

The "pounding" tech stocks have been taking in the public market has forced Silicon Valley to wonder if a startup's ability to make a profit really does matter after all. But don't expect a moment of reckoning.
