This would be a great time to talk about how fears of "Manhattanization" in the 80s led to the passage of Proposition M, which permanently capped the amount of new office space that can be created each year.
Ill-conceived bandaid fixes having worse consequences later down the line? Gosh, I've never heard of that happening before.

I'm believe building more office space downtown would be beneficial for the city (and even better for the city's non-profits), but what I'd really like to see is that the amount of office space created be somehow tied to housing production. The Bay Area is great at "creating" jobs, but terrible at housing those workers.
Now, how you could possibly mandate an office-to-housing ration, especially considering zoning laws, is another matter...
