"The world's first mobile event booking and discovery app" sounds like a snoozefest until you hear that Pharrell Williams will be performing at its "red carpet prelaunch party." (Even then, "world's first" should come with an asterisk or ten.)

The aforementioned red carpet is being rolled out this Thursday on the Lower East Side by the startup London-based startup YPlan, which has raised $13.7 million from investors including General Catalyst Partners, Dave Morin's investment firm Slow Ventures, and Ashton Kutcher's A-Grade Investments, to celebrate their New York City debut.

Major tech corporations routinely shell out for major acts. But $250,000 to $500,000, which is what we heard booking Pharrell is likely to cost, is still pricey for a startup. Did YPlan really blow that much of their funding? Nope, says YPlan, offering up this perfect little microcosm of new bubble economics: "Pharrell Williams is an advisor and shareholder in YPlan, and is excited to support YPlan's launch in the US."

What rhymes with hug me?
