If you enjoy Tumblr's extensive selection of rape fantasy, underage girls, and women having sex with a variety of fauna, good news: Marissa Mayer just said she's keeping Tumblr NSFW.

If you're a potential advertiser, this might not be such good news, as there's no mechanism (yet) to prevent your branded content from appearing next to a girl choking on a dog's dick. Marketers try to avoid that sort of thing whenever possible, and it'll be a hump between here and profitability—there's a reason why Facebook keeps an iron wall up against "adult content."

As I said in a previous comment, I expect them to relaunch something similar to what we now think of as Google ads. Yahoo! actually owns the patent on keyword advertising and because (at least) one of their previous CEOs was an idiot, they gave Google a perpetual license for a song.

Just like there's an optional widget on Blogspot for an Adsense box, if it were me, I'd offer something similar to the Tumblr bloggers and I'd make it part of the terms that the keyword box can't appear on an NSFW post or blog.

Yahoo Search Marketing has been around since 2005 and was around even earlier than that under the Overture brand. It's anyones guess why YSM hasn't taken off...but from what I remember it was a bigger pain in the ass to get approved for an account than Google Adwords.

Why don't they just ask advertisers if they'd be ok with their ads next to NSFW content? It's easy enough to tag what's NSFW and what isn't; start with the #NSFW tag and go from there.

The question is: where will the ads be directed to? The dashboards (which are not visible to those that read tumblrs through their respective URLs) or the Tumblrs themselves or both? Because if the ads are meant for the dashboards, I doubt marketers would care as much since they would only be visible for the owner of the tumblr and not publicly associated with the NSFW content. Kinda like the ads embedded on google mail/ hotmail, etc, which only the owners of the accounts can see.
