The wonder of watching a little car icon move towards you on your smartphone screen, some idle chit chat, paying without pulling out a credit card. Watching a plain clothes officer rip open the door to arrest your driver is not one of them.

Facebook Is Throttling Nonprofits and Activists

So far coverage of Facebook's plan to squeeze the organic reach of Pages has focused on its impact on "brands" that spam us with ads and promotions. But nonprofits, activists, and advocacy groups with much fewer resources (and no ad budgets) are also being hugely affected. It's starting to look like Facebook is willing to strangle public discourse on the platform in an attempt to wring out a few extra dollars for its new shareholders.

Disney was in talks to buy Buzzfeed, but negotiations failed when the site asked for "upwards of $1 billion," says Fortune. That could mean Buzzfeed's valuation grew 67 percent since September, when we heard the company thought it was worth $600 million. The 1 Downside to High Valuations: it's hard to find a buyer.

GitHub posted a more transparent look into their investigation over harassment claims. Results show that ex-CEO Tom Preston-Werner "acted inappropriately, including confrontational conduct, disregard of workplace complaints" as well as "insensitivity to the impact" of his wife's continued presence in the office, and "failure to enforce an agreement" to keep her out.

The next time you hop in an UberX—one of the transit startup's fancy gypsy cabs run by unlicensed drivers—you'll notice a new "Safe Ride Fee" added to your fare. It's only a dollar, but since when do we have to pay extra to not get raped?
