Napster Cofounder Shawn Fanning Is Allegedly a Deadbeat Dad [Update]
Nitasha Tiku · 01/22/14 02:35PM
When Jessica Wigsmoen first met Napster cofounder Shawn Fanning at a party at Sean Parker's West Village party house, she didn't think it would end like this. "I lived in New York, I had a really good life," Wigsmoen told me by phone last week. "I met this guy who acted like prince charming." Now, she claims Fanning is denying child support for their 2-year-old daughter, Scarlett. [Update: Valleywag received new information that Fanning has been sending significant, regular payments for Scarlett's care for two years. Full details at the bottom of the post.]

San Francisco startup Outbox thought it had the solution. Maybe it did. Now it is gone. Good.

Last July describing the cultural impact of Black Twitter, Buzzfeed's Shani O. Hilton wrote, "It's diffuse, powerful, and all around you." That's the kind of active, influential user base that startups dream of. But we've barely heard a peep about it from Twitter. Now that it needs ad revenue, that's changing.

Unless you have a lot of money, it's often impossible to find a suitable spot for your business in New York, with office lease prices through the roof—and if you're a cash-strapped startup, well, don't bother getting out of bed. Shared offices are increasingly the norm, and it's a good business to be in.

Investors who aren't announcing another $1.5 billion fund still have to get attention somehow, or they'll lose deal flow to the latest venture celebrity. Gil Dibner, a VC at DFJ Espirit, thought maybe a "VC Code of Conduct" might do the trick. But the 17 point promise inadvertently outlines all the ways investors will give founders a raw deal.

As the saying goes, If you're not paying for the product, you are the product. For social networks and their data brokers, that product is personal data about what you like and what you buy, even the President knows how that works. Self-quantification startups, on the other hand, look at the product within you. It's a very literal take on behavioral tracking.
